Ontario exploring Conservation Reserve designation on Prince Edward County's south shore

My colleague Ontario's Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks Jeff Yurek, joined Prince Edward County Mayor Steve Ferguson, naturalists representing the South Shore Joint Initiative and other key stakeholders and I for an important announcement at Pt. Petre Sept. 10.

Our government has listened to a proposal from SSJI and has started the process to explore designation of the Ostander Point Crown Land Block and the Pt. Petre Provincial Wildlife Area as a Conservation Reserve.  This move would offer long-term protection for these important ecological areas and introduce new stewardship management plans to guide public use.  If approved, this would be the first new Conservation Reserve in Ontario since 1999.  The process will include a public consultation component.
